Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park Rwanda is found in North East, at the country’s border with Tanzania. It is dominated by swamps and small lakes which flow in the wake of River Kagera which the park is named after. The network of water sources and unique landscape together create very spectacular scenery, that feeds different water bodies, including Lake Ihema.

The park is notable for its conservation efforts and is a MUST for wildlife enthusiasts. It hosts Africa’s “Big 5” – elephants, lions, rhinoceros, buffalos and leopards*. as well as; giraffes, and numerous bird species. hyenas, zebras, giraffe and several antelopes like the bushbucks, roan antelope, Topis, klipspringer, Oribis, Cape eland, water-buck, duikers and impalas. Lake Ihema is home to crocodiles and hippos which can best be viewed during boat rides. There are a number of primates species found within the park too. *Leopards are best seen on a night ride.

Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe National Park is located in the western Great Rift Valley, it stretches from Lake Albert to Lake Tanganyika. The Rift has many mountains and lakes that flow west into the Congo River system.

The Albertine rift, besides having an amazing landscape, it is also known for its endemic species of fauna and flora. In Nyungwe Forest there are about 1,068 plant species, among them over 200 species are trees and 248 species of Orchids, and other new species are being found each year. And also about 85 mammal species are found in Nyungwe, including 13 primates’ species.

Nyungwe accommodates over 300 bird species & 29 species of them are endemics to the Albertine rift. This makes Nyungwe Forest one of the best bird watching sites in Africa, as many have named it a ‘birds paradise’.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes national park is a stop centre for all Rwanda gorilla safaris sheltering the highest number of mountain gorillas in the Virunga Conservation area. The strategic location of the VNP roughly 2 hours drive from Kigali international airport make it the most accessible gorilla national park in the world. Besides gorillas, Volcanoes National park is a home for golden monkeys, a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects among other creatures which together make a complete Rwanda safari package.

Spanning on a 160 sq km area in the northern part of Rwanda, Volcanoes national park is part of the great Virunga volcano conservation region spanning to also cover: “Virunga National Park” in Congo and “Mgahinga Gorilla National Park” in Uganda. It was initially a small area around Karisimbi, Mikeno and Visoke volcanoes which was gazetted to protect the Mountain gorillas which were facing the threat of extinction as a result of poaching.
