Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is a picturesque destination celebrated for its breathtaking scenery, tranquil waters, and diverse range of activities. Visitors can enjoy scenic boat rides, engage in water sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming, or unwind on the lakeshore. The popular towns of Gisenyi and Kibuye provide opportunities to explore local markets, dine in restaurants, and visit cultural sites.
Nearby coffee plantations offer insights into Rwanda’s coffee production process, while Gisenyi’s natural hot springs provide a soothing retreat. The region is rich in birdlife, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
Cultural tours allow visitors to immerse themselves in local traditions by exploring fishing villages, markets, and cultural centres. Hiking and biking in the nearby hills offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding landscape.
Night Fishing on Kivu
When we plan your activities on the Congo Nile Trail, you may also include the ‘fishermen’ experience. This unique adventure allows tourists to accompany local fishermen as they embark on their nightly quest for Isambaza, a fish akin to a small sardine. The fishing methods used here are distinctive to the region.
The fishermen’s nocturnal journey across the lake, accompanied by their melodious songs and illuminated by bright lanterns, is mesmerizing. To partake in this expedition, tourists should be prepared to arrive at the lake shore by 4:30 PM to observe the entire process, from boat and net preparation to forming teams and setting out onto the lake. We will book a separate boat with a guide who can translate and explain the events as they unfold.
Twin Lakes
The Twin Lakes of Burera (sat above its twin) and Ruhondo, are located near Rwanda’s majestic Volcanoes National Park, and are a stunning natural wonder. Nestled between the towering volcanic mountains, these serene lakes offer visitors a tranquil escape with opportunities for boat rides, bird watching, and exploring the scenic shores.
Close to the lakes, you’ll find Rwanda’s hydroelectric plant, which uses the lakes’ altitude differences to harness the power of these waters to provide clean energy to the region. This blend of natural beauty and sustainable development showcases Rwanda’s commitment to preserving its environment while advancing its infrastructure.
